News Focus: GURUH'S DREAM TO BE PDIP GENERAL CHAIRMAN WON'T COME TRUE

By Eliswan Azly

Jakarta, Apr 4 (ANTARA) - Perhaps Guruh Soekarno's ambition to become General Chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) will remain a dream which will never come true in the party's congress to be officially opened in Bali on April 6.

The chance of Guruh Soekarnoputra to compete for the post of general chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle is already closed, Committee Chairwoman Puan Maharani said in Denpasar over the week-end.

According to her, the nomination of candidates had been finalized as all board members had already named Megawati Soekarnoputri during the conference of regional and branch board members to become the candidate for the post.

"In line with party's mechanism and referring to the decision of the central executive board number 435/KPTS/DPP/XI/2009, the candidates for the general chairmanship is are nominated in the conference of the party's regional and branch boards," she said.

Based on the results of the conference in the 33 regional chapters across Indonesia, all have agreed to nominate Megawati to resume the general chairwomanship of the party for the 2010-2015 term.

Puan Maharani who is the eldest daughter of Megawati assured that the party's third congress in Bali on April 6-9 would stop receiving other names of candidates for the post.

"The congress will discuss more about the party's political stance, internal rules and working programs," she said in the company of Tjahjo Kumolo, Anak Agung Oka Ratmadi, and other party executives.

Guruh's chance to become general chairman of the party is not as big as that of Megawati, who happened to be his younger sister. He is relatively new in politics.

"It's feared that there will be sharp rift within the party if Megawati is not re-elected as General Chairperson," an observer of the University of Indonesia (UI) Kamarudin said.

With the image of PDIP as a family party, what Guruh can do is only to expect the kindness of his sister for the post of deputy general chairman, or secretary general.

"Or perhaps a certain figure in the family may come to surface," he said, adding that Guruh is well-known in the entertainment world.

Guruh established an Indonesian art group popularly known as Gencar Semarak Perkasa, but before that it was known as Swara Mahardika. In addition, he has also established Guruh Gypsy and Gank Pengangsaa music groups along with Keenan Nasution, Abdil Soesman and Chrisye.

In the meantime, during a visit to Antara office last month, Guruh said that as one of the party's functionaries he was ready to run for the general chairmanship of PDIP to replace Megawati in the party's congress in Bali.
"I am ready to hold the mandate of the party's leadership in the future. But success however depends on the support of the party's cadres," Guruh said.

Guruh expressed his seriousness to lead the party to bear the trust of its supporters and to facilitate the aspiration of its sympathizers as well as to fight in the interest of the people.

"I am serious in my endeavor in the contest. If there is no such seriousness, it means I betrayed the advice of may late father, President Soekarno. Hence I am ready to lead the party," Guruh said.
In the meantime, Dr Sofyan Siregar who is also a roving lecturer of the Islamic University of North Sumatra said that Guruh was a prospective figure to lead the PDIP.

"In my view, Megawati is no longer salable that can be promoted to the Indonesian people," Sofyan said adding that it was time for the party to replace its general chairman in a bid to win general election in 2014.

According to him, PDIP should be able to change its paradigm over the leadership of the party. Charismatic President Soekarno could not yet be sold to the public as the people are living in a global era.

If the party still relied on charismatic Soekarno in its campaign, the victory expected to be gained in 2014 would remain a dream, Sofyan said.

The global era is marked with a war of concepts, ability to convince the public in addition to a figure's acceptability.

In the past, such acceptability of a certain figure could be associated to charisma. But now it was always linked to the management and policy of the party.

In terms of management, PDIP was exactly a family party whereas the leader was Megawati while the deputy chairmanship based on a rumor would likely go to Puan Maharani, Sofyan said.

In last year's general election, Megawati was a loser and how could she become the winner, Sofyan said, adding, "I heard a rumor that Megawati will lead the party for the 2010-2015 term."
If Megawati wanted to win the next general election, Sofyan said the figure from PDIP should be the one who has bright perspectives and the ability to communicate with the people other than the party's cadres.
