Finance minister, BOK leader meet to discuss policy direction

SEOUL, April 5 (Yonhap) - South Korea's Finance Minister Yoon Jeung-hyun and the
new governor of the nation's central bank Kim Choong-soo held a meeting on Monday
to discuss their views on economic policy and other financial measures, officials
said.
The meeting, also attended by high-ranking policymakers from both sides, is being
closely watched as it is the first of its kind after Bank of Korea (BOK) Gov. Kim
was inaugurated in April, possibly providing a glimpse into his monetary policy
direction. The BOK is to gather for a rate-setting on Friday.
Under his predecessor Lee Seong-tae, whose four-year term ended in March, the
central bank was frequently at odds with the government over the timing of a rate
hike from the record low of 2 percent maintained for 13 consecutive months aimed
at bolstering the sluggish economy.
The government has pushed for the rate to remain low for the time being to
accelerate an economic recovery.
