Cargo handling at S. Korean ports jumps 20 pct in March


SEOUL, April 5 (Yonhap) -- The volume of cargo handled at South Korean seaports
soared 19.6 percent in March from a year earlier on the back of a global economic
recovery, data showed Monday.
According to the data compiled by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime
Affairs, a total of 1.59 million TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units, were
processed at local seaports in March, compared with 1.33 million TEUs a year
earlier.
Busan was the nation's busiest port last month, with container cargo reaching
1.17 million TEUs, accounting for 73 percent out of the total cargo traffic in
the country.
The country's largest port handled more than 1 million TEUs for the ninth
straight month in March, the ministry said.
Cargo volume at the port of Gwangyang jumped 14.5 percent from a year earlier to
a record 170,000 TEUs in February while that of Incheon soared 72.1 percent to
144,000 TEUs during the cited period, it said.
