MINISTER TO VISIT MIDEAST TO IMPROVE INDONESIAN MIGRANT WORKERS' FATE

Jakarta, Apr 5 (ANTARA) - Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said he is making a working visit to the countries in the Middle East where Indonesian migrant workers are placed, from April 5 to 11.

The minister said in Jakarta Monday in those countries like Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia he will discuss improved cooperation in the placement and protection of Indonesian migrant workers employed there.

He is scheduled to start his working visit to Doha, capital of Qatar, and later to Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UEA).

Later he was scheduled to visit Beirut, and conclude his tour in Riyadh and Jidda, Saudi Arabia.

In those countries he will have special meetings with Indonesian embassy staff members, visit Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) centers, and have bilateral talks with his local counterparts.

He said in those countries he will also consider new memoranda of understanding (MoU).

"But in Qatar, UEA, and Saudi Arabia, new MoUs had already been renewed, so that talks will be focused on TKI protection and expanded employment market, except in Lebanon, where an MoU will be sought," he said.

Muhaimin hoped his meeting and bilateral talks with his counterparts in the countries where TKIs had been placed, will produce long-term improved TKI placement.

He said Indonesia needs to try harder in implementing the MoUs, because there are at least 15 countries where TKIs are sent, but only nine of them have an MoU on manpower.
