News Focus: BOEDIONO GETS SIGNIFICANT TASK TO ATTEND NUCLEAR SUMMIT

By Bustanuddin.
Jakarta, April 10 (ANTARA) - Vice President Boediono on April 12-13 this year will have a significant task to lead Indonesian delegation in a Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) in Washington.

Boediono will lead the Indonesian delegation which includes Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Darwin Saleh and other senior officials concerned with nuclear power, to the summit.

"Tonight he leaves for Washington for the NSS," his spokesman, Yopie Hidayat, said here on Saturday, adding that Boediono and delegation would take a Garuda Indonesia commercial flight via Tokyo.

"The summit will be very important because Indonesia is currently the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM`s) head of nuclear affairs. So far the NAM members have always been critical to the US policy on nuclear proliferation," he said.

Yopie said the NSS was actually the pledge made by the US president Barack Obama during his presidential campaign.

At the time he said that in his first tenure or within four years, men will have a new order to secure nuclear weapons and nuclear materials which could be used to make weapons.

The security is needed to prevent the fall of nuclear weapons in the hands of terrorists to threaten the lives of millions of innocent people.

Not only the US, a lot of other countries also do not like to see terrorists possessing nuclear weapons, which will be a real danger for mankind.

That is why, he said, 45 countries have enthusiastically welcomed the US invitation by sending their delegations there including Indonesia.

He said until Saturday it had been reported that 42 delegations to the meeting would be led directly by their heads of states or vice heads of states including Indonesia, showing the importance of the meeting.

Earlier, Yopie said it was necessary for the Indonesian vice president to attend the summit in an effort to prevent nuclear energy from being used by irresponsible parties to create chaos in the world.

"Nuclear energy can also pose a serious threat to the countries in the five continents," Hidayat said, adding that Indonesia would continue to participate in nuclear-related conferences.

In the meantime, the House of Representatives (DPR) has given the green light to the government`s intention to go ahead with its plan to build nuclear power plants (PLTNs).

Looking ahead, Indonesia could no longer rely on unrenewable energy sources such as gas and coal to generate electricity, chairman of the House Commission overseeing energy, technology and the environment Teuku Riefky Harsya said in a press statement on Monday (March 15).

"About safety, I believe that nuclear power plants will not leak if managed properly," he said commenting on the results of the House Commission`s visit to the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan) in Serpong, south of here.

Now that Batan had recommended the construction of nuclear power plants in the country, the House was ready to give political and budget support, Harsya said.

Deputy for nuclear energy technology development to Batam chief Adi Wardojo said Indonesia could now make preparations for the construction of nuclear power plants.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also had given the same recommendations about the matter, he said.

Indonesia had uranium reserves in Kalimantan capable of producing 1,000 megawatts of electricity for 150 years, he said.

"But the construction of nuclear power plants largely depends on the government policy. What Batan can only do is promoting, familiarizing the public with and, drafting policy on the use of nuclear energy. We need political and budget supports from the government," he cited.

He said the agency had conducted a feasibility study on the construction of nuclear power plants by taking into account safety, public interests and the environment.

According to him, the technological design of nuclear power plants with a multi defense system was also safe.

"We do not need to dispose of nuclear waste because it can be used again as a source of fuel for nuclear power plants after being stored for some time," he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of State for Public Affairs of Research and Technology ministry Prof. Carunia Mulya Firdaus said in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung province on Wednesday (March 24) that the construction cost of one unit of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) reached Rp10 to Rp15 trillion.

However, the Indonesian Forum for Environment (WALHI) of Bangka Belitung (Babel), area stated that the construction of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is very dangerous because it can threaten community life.
