TWO POLICE OFFICERS INJURED IN PAPUAN VILLAGE BRAWL



Jayapura, April 15 (ANTARA) - Two police officers suffered injuries from arrow shots while trying to end a brawl between residents of two kampongs in Kwamki Lama, Timika, Mimika District, Papua Province, on Thursday.

Chief brigadier Kanisius was shot in his chest, and Brigadier II Antar in his left hand, said Mimika Police Chief Senior Adjunct Commissioner M Sagi in response to ANTARA's question.

The two injured officers were rushed to two different hospitals, namely Mitra Masyarakat Hospital and Timika Regional Public Hospital, for medical treatment, he said.

Despite the brawl, the situation in Kwamki area was in general still under control, he said.

Around 60 policemen were mobilized to handle the conflict in Kwamki Lama, around five kilometers of Timika town, he said.

The brawl has broken out since Wednesday evening (April 14), following the death of Kalelo Kogoya, a resident of Ile Ale Jalur V, Karang Senang-SP3 kampong at Mitra Masyarakat Hospital, in Timika, on late Wednesday.

Kalelo died after suffering injuries from 20 arrow shots allegedly conducted by a local residents' group in Timika road towards Kwamki Lama, on Wednesday noon.

Following the fatality, two rivalry groups in Kwamki Lama were on alert and equip themselves with arrows, chopping knives, and other sharp objects.
