Haiku-loving EU President publishes 1st haiku collection+

BRUSSELS, April 15 Kyodo - European Union President Herman Van Rompuy published his first collection of haiku, traditional Japanese-style poems, on Thursday ahead of his scheduled visit to Japan later this month.

Van Rompuy, whose collection contains 45 haiku written in Dutch and translated
into English, French and Latin, read a poem at a ceremony held in Brussels and
said he would like to write a haiku during his stay in Japan.
A fan of 17th-century Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, Van Rompuy has been posting
his haiku written in Dutch on his website.
In Japanese, haiku consist of three lines of five, seven and five syllables.
