UAE prices up in March, first rise in three months

Abu Dhabi, April 25, 2010 (WAM)- Consumer prices in the UAE rose 0.68 per cent year-on-year in March, official data showed Saturday, following three consecutive months of decline according to a report in "Gulf News."
The key housing and energy component rose 0.5 per cent in March compared to the same period last year.
The education component registered the biggest year-on-year rise, climbing 10.46 per cent compared to 2009. The consumer price index in the UAE edged up to 114.13 points in March, compared to 113.36 points in March 2009. Prices rose 0.09 per cent month-on-month, the data showed, also the first increase after three consecutive months.
A Reuters poll showed analysts expected average inflation of 2.5 per cent in 2010, after it slowed to a nine-year low of 1.56 per cent last year. The central bank has said inflation, which hit 12.3 per cent in 2008, would stay low.
The data also showed that consumer prices rose 0.87 per cent in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period last year.
CPI increases 2.75%
Abu Dhabi's March consumer price index rose 2.75 per cent from the year-ago period, the emirate's Statistics Centre said yesterday. March inflation accelerated from 1.9 per cent in February, according to the statement. The cost of goods for consumers in the capital rose 2.01 per cent in the first quarter from the year-earlier period, the Statistics Centre said.
The report is on the consumer price index (CPI) for March 2010, with the base year of 2007.
The CPI for the reference period (January to March 2010) advanced to 117.64 points, up from 115.32 points for the first quarter of 2009.
The report also reveals that the CPI for March 2010 has edged up 0.70 per cent to 118.37 points compared to 117.55 points in February 2010.
To represent all regions of the emirate, the selected sample of items included in the CPI basket uses actual data from the 2007 survey of household income and expenditure. The sample of sources from which the prices were collected was chosen in such a way as to represent points of purchase for a large base of consumers all over the emirate of Abu Dhabi, taking into account the geographical distribution of sources within the emirate. – Gulf News
