Nahyan bin Mubarak awarded Honorary Doctorate by Australia's Murdoch University

Abu Dhabi, April 29, 2010 (WAM)- The United Arab Emirates has an exceptional national education system, thanks to the far-reaching vision of its founder and late President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan that was expanded by the wise leadership of President, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum and HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, said Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research HE Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan.
"Building a peaceful and prosperous global society must be anchored in an educated citizenry in all corners of the world. If we are to solve global socio-economic problems, if we are to succeed in the highly competitive and increasingly integrated world markets, if we are to profit from the amazing new technologies, if we are to resolve regional and global conflicts, then we must give the highest priority to investment in the human mind as the best way to modify human behaviour and attitudes", Sheikh Nahyan added.
He was delivering the acceptance speech after receiving the honorary doctorate from Australia's Murdoch University.
The ceremony held at the convention centre at the Zayed University campus in Dubai was attended by Australian ambassador to UAE Douglas Trappett, Chancellor Budge and other senior officials of Murdoch University, Vice Chancellor of the Zayed University Dr. Sulaiman Jassem, UAE University Vice Chancellor Dr. Abdullah Al Khanbashi, HCT Vice Chancellor Dr. Tayeb Al Kamali and other dignitaries.
"We must give the highest priority to disseminating knowledge and applying it to advance human welfare; then we can produce the resources to abolish the disease, the hunger, the illiteracy and insecurity that still blight the lives of millions", Sheikh Nahyan continued.
He added that disparities in skills and educational resources contribute to the persistent wider imbalances between nations; successful development around the world requires that these disparities be reduced or altogether eradicated.
Sheikh Nahyan said that the UAE and Australia play major roles in world affairs and it is our duty to enhance their mutual cooperation and understanding in all areas.
"We share in your optimism that this reservoir of good will between our two countries will lead to many cooperative initiatives in the future", he said.
Sheikh Nahyan was awarded the honorary doctorate in appreciation of his efforts in the development of education, especially higher education in the UAE.
"Our strategy in building and maintaining the quality of that system is to set high standards for ourselves and for our students. At every level, our educational programs aim to provide a broad base of knowledge, understanding and analytical capability and to prepare students to become leaders and innovators", Sheikh Nahyan said.
He added that the national education system is complimented and enriched by an important non-governmental education sector that increasingly provides opportunities for both Nationals and expatriates.
"Outstanding educational institutions from many countries contribute to the quality and excellence of our educational offerings, with Murdoch and other prominent Australian universities at the forefront", Sheikh Nahyan said.
