Global nuke centre to train security forces in atomic field

New Delhi, May 2 (PTI) The Global Centre for Nuclear
Energy Partnership, announced by Indian Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh last month, will be set up in Delhi or its
neighbourhood and involve first-of-its-kind training of
security forces in the atomic field.
The centre, intended to be a state-of-the-art institute
with four schools, will be open to nationals of any country to
participate in research and development of design systems that
are secure, proliferation resistant and sustainable.
Singh announced setting up of the centre at the Nuclear
Security Summit on April 12 to demonstrate India's responsible
behaviour in the nuclear field.
Sources said preparations for setting up the institute
had been going on for over six months before the Prime
Minister made the announcement.
The centre will come up in Delhi or its adjoining areas
like Noida or Gurgaon, they said, adding the process is on to
locate a specific place and acquire land there.
It will consist of four Schools dealing with Nuclear
Security, Advanced Nuclear Energy System Studies, Radiation
Safety and application of Radioisotopes and Radiation
Technology in areas of healthcare, agriculture and food.
The centre will involve international participation from
IAEA and other interested foreign partners.
The School of Nuclear Security Studies will impart
training to security forces on application of physical
protection systems and response procedures, to enhance
physical security of nuclear facilities by developing and
deploying most modern technological tools including
information security.
It will also provide facilities for test and evaluation
of sensors and systems used for physical security.
This will be the first time that security forces in the
country would be trained in ensuring safety of nuclear
installations and material. (MORE) PTI
