Orphanage-leavers to receive assistance

Astana, 10 July 2008, Khabar - "Life and career planning" was the title given to a project aimed at helping orphans in their future life.

The campaign started in early June bringing its first results now and teachers say that the one-off monetary support provided by the majority of sponsors of the orphanages is not so effective.

It is more important to help the young people adapt to adult life. The development of leadership skills is the basis on which, according to psychologists, the children have an opportunity to solve issues of unemployment, accommodation, leisure and freetime and to create their own families without any assistance.

Natalya Bakhmutova, director, young leaders' association: - It is sometimes difficult for those children who live in a segregated environment such as an orphanage, to understand who they really are and howthey can fulfil themselves, their capacity and skills.

Every year thousands of orphans leave orphanage to enter the adult life which is why the Republic's only youth-house is open for them. There, experienced teachers try to unveil individual features of each youngster toprovide them with professional qualification and assistance in employment.

They receive preferential housing loans and the opportunity to study in universities and have work experience in various enterprises. This is the method which psychologists call "to provide a fishing-rod rather than a fish". Such social support requires a much larger contribution but gives more effective results. (Khabar Agency)
