Samsung Techwin exports traffic monitoring robotics system to Algeria

SEOUL, May 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean precision electronics parts maker Samsung
Techwin Co. said Wednesday that it signed a US$50 million deal to export a
traffic monitoring robotics system to Algeria's capital city.
The testbed contract, supported by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, calls for a
comprehensive automated system that can recognize and track the movement of
vehicles in Algiers with the help of 1,700 "smart" cameras.
The system merges robotics with information technology and aims to facilitate
traffic control and bolster road safety. The cameras are designed to follow
individual vehicles on the streets.
The company, which is a subsidiary of South Korea's largest conglomerate Samsung
Group, also said that if the system proves to be effective, additional exports
may be secured.
If the system can be installed across Algeria and in other African and Middle
Eastern countries, the size of such orders may exceed an estimated 1 trillion won
($879 million), the company said.
The global market size for monitoring robotic systems is expected to grow 38.6
percent annually in the coming year to top $13.3 billion won in 2012, from just
$3.6 billion in 2008.
Samsung Techwin had received state funding to develop the tracking system, as
well as cameras and a tracking algorithm.
