Gov't to designate fire lanes, fine unyielding cars

SEOUL, May 13 (Yonhap) -- The government plans to designate fire lanes in Seoul
sometime this year to allow better and speedier access by fire trucks, the state
emergency agency said Thursday.
The government will fine cars that do not yield to fire trucks, the National
Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.
According to the plan, the agency would reserve the center lane of roads with
three or more lanes for fire trucks with sirens blaring -- indicating an
emergency. These lanes will reopen to other vehicles once the trucks have passed.
NEMA is in talks with related agencies about where to designate the fire lanes
and when the plan will be implemented, officials said.
The agency also plans to install cameras on fire trucks as early as August to
videotape cars that do not make way and fine them up to 200,000 won (US$177)
