SRI MULYANI BIDS FAREWELL TO JOURNALISTS

Jakarta, May 13 (ANTARA) - Finance minister Sri Mulyani who is to leave for her new post at the World Bank held a farewell meeting with journalists here on Thursday.

At the meeting Mulyani expressed her wish for continued promotion of transparency and accountability of policies of the finance ministry.

"Transparency and accountability of policies are a must in the democratic era. We must be able to explain policies that we take regardless of their sensitivity," she said.

In view of the experience of advanced countries every policy must be made known to the public because they have a right to know about it and an obligation to exercise control on it, she said.

Referring to Japan as an example she said the finance ministry of that country always holds a press conference three times a week namely at the beginning, the middle an the end of the week to explain about its policies.

She said she had so far tried to hold a press conference every week or every time a policy is to be issued. "This is done for explaining the government`s move, what it would do, (because) it would affect the ups and downs of the economy," she said.

She hoped the tradition of information transparency would continue to be upheld after she left the office to be the World Bank`s managing director.

On the occasion she expressed thanks to all journalists covering his office`s activities so far.

She said the dynamics that had happened so far were something common.

The head of the forum of journalists covering the ministry, Arif Sinaga, meanwhile said that Sri Mulyani`s presence at the ministry would leave a special impression.

As a journalist who has covered the office for a long time he said he felt the dynamic relationship between the journalists and her.
