POLICE TO SEND HOME 13 ALLEGED TERRORISTS

Jakarta, May 13 (ANTARA) - Police will send home 13 people arrested in various places in Jakarta on May 6 upon suspicion of being alleged terrorist members due to lack of evidence, Brigadier General Zaenuri Lubis said.

"Three others meanwhile would likely be named suspects as there have been strong early evidence showing their alleged involvement in a terrorism case in Aceh," the National Police deputy spokesman said.

According to the law the police have seven days to examine a person suspected of involvement in a terrorism case.

Lubis said "the deadline is later at 24.00 hours. So after midnight the 13 people will be sent home or handed over to their lawyers."

He said all of the people had been arrested upon indications of alleged involvement in a criminal case of terrorism activity namely a military-like training in Jantho forests, Aceh Besar, Aceh, last February.

Lubis would not tell the identities of the people saying "we will give an official statement about them tomorrow."

The police on May 6 arrested 13 people upon suspicion of being linked to terrorism in Pejaten, Petamburan, Menteng and Bekasi. The following day they arrested three more people. They were all taken to the Mobile Brigade headquarters for questioning.

On May 9 and 10 their families came to the National Police headquarters to ask for information about their family members in the company of their lawyer.

They however failed to meet with the family members at the time but a senior police officer assured them that they would be released if no evidence of their involvement in terrorism was found.
