Health Adviser to reduce population growth for ensuring better services in health

DHAKA, July 11 (BSS) - Adviser for Health and Family Welfareand Food and Disaster Management of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr AMM Shawkat Ali today said the rate of population growth should be further reduced to ensure better services in the health sector.

"Country's population now stands at 14 crore and we should further reduce the birth rate to uphold the fundamental rights of the people," he said while addressing a press briefing here onthe eve of the World Population Day 2008 here.

Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare AKM Zafarullah Khan and senior officials were present on theoccasion.

The main theme of this year's World Population Day is: "Rights of people to plan their families: let's ensure this commitment." The government has strengthened its ongoing programmes to control population growth in light of this theme,the Adviser said.

He said the family welfare activities would be further strengthened in the Chittagong, Barisal and Sylhet divisions,where the rate of population growth is gradually rising.

Dr AMM Shawkat Ali said the National Population Council hasalready been reconstituted under the leadership of Chief Adviser.

The significant programmes to enhance family welfare activities as per the Council's decision are: filling up 4,910 vacant posts at field level, fixing new strategies for providing services and giving information about family welfare issues to the inhabitantsin char and haor areas, slum dwellers and the floating people.

The programmes include ensuring and strengthening registration of fertile couples in the slums in city corporation areas and towns and creating awareness among the new couplesabout family welfare activities.

The Adviser said the rate of population growth at present is 1.41 percent and the population would stand to 17.20 crore by the year 2020 if the fertility rate remains at 2.2 percent. "The population should remain at a logical level, otherwise it wouldbe difficult to ensure health services for all<' he said.
