(LEAD) Samsung Electronics makes deal with James Cameron for 3D content

(ATTN: ADDS more details throughout)
SEOUL, May 14 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea's leading
electronics maker, said Friday it will work with leading Hollywood director James
Cameron to create 3D content.
Cameron, whose blockbuster "Avatar" started a 3D wave in the movie industry, will
film concerts and music videos featuring South Korean singers managed by SM
Entertainment Co. in 3D format. These will be used to market Samsung's 3D TVs,
the company said.
Cameron helped launch Samsung's 3D hi-definition LED TV -- the world's first --
in the United States in March, calling the arrival of 3D HDTVs a breakthrough in
the future of entertainment.
Samsung Electronics aims at selling more than 2 million 3D TVs this year.
3D technology, which gives the illusion of depth on a flat screen, has been
aggressively pursued by global TV makers, including Samsung Electronics and LG
Electronics Inc.
Riding on the huge global success of Avatar, TV makers have been increasingly
betting on 3D TVs to drive sales growth and larger profits. They are hoping that
the success of 3D movies such as Avatar will prod consumers to upgrade their TVs
to more expensive models enabled with the technology.
Global demand for 3D TVs could reach 15.6 million units in 2013, leaping from an
estimated 1.2 million this year, according to research firm.
