24/5 Tass 74

PYONGYANG, May 24 (Itar-Tass) - The Memorial honouring the Soviet
Soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Korea has been
restored in the Hamhung city in the Hamgyong-namdo province of North
Korea. The capital repairs have been conducted with funds provided by the
Russian Embassy to North Korea and the city people's committee. An
official of the Russian diplomatic mission told Itar-Tass on Monday that
the monument's face with the inscription "Eternal Memory to the Soviet
Soldiers Liberators!" was fully renewed, in particular.
According to him, 174 Soviet soldiers, including 82 marines, were
killed in battle there. The names of 14 of them are known.
At present there are 12 military memorial sites in North Korea in
honour of Soviet soldiers that in 1945 took part in combat operations
against the Japanese army.
Aside from Pyongyang and Hamhung, monuments, memorials and burial
sites of Soviet soldiers are located in the cities of Chongjin, Wonsan,
Rajin, Haeju, Namp'o, Sinuiju and a number of others. According to the RF
embassy, a total of 1,372 Soviet citizens, including 991 military
servicemen, are buried in the territory of North Korea. Not all of them
have been identified, but, according to the diplomatic mission, each year
"the number of unidentified fallen soldiers decreases and changes are made
to the monuments' tombstones thanks to the meticulous work in archives,
also by the Russian Defence Ministry that has the data of combat losses of
those years."
