NO FINAL RECOMMENDATION ON FORMATION OF MALAYSIA MEDIA COUNCIL

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The formation of the National Media
Council has been postponed because the Media Coordination Committee represented
by various parties has yet to make a final recommendation, parliament was told
Monday.

Deputy Minister of Information Communication and Culture Joseph Salang
said the postponement was also because the print media was under the
jurisdiction of the Home Ministry while general supervision was under the
Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said this when replying to a question from MP Kahiry Jamaluddin.

On the willingness of the government to amend or abolish the Printing
Presses and Publications Act 1984 and replace it with an independent body to
regulate the media industry in view of the developments within the alternative
media, he said it was up to the Home Ministry.

"But the Information Communication and Culture Ministry is of the opinion
that the existence of the National Media Council will be able to assist the
government indirectly in controlling online content," he added.
