WORLD CUP 'FEVER' BOOST FOR LCD TV SALES

By Zulkiple Ibrahim

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 (Bernama) -- The World Cup fever is on. The one-month period from June 11 is a significant 'stretch' for football fans worldwide as this is the time where the 19th FIFA World Cup Tournament is taking place in South Africa.

In Malaysia, the World Cup hype on the television screen began months ago
and among the promotions was the slogan "watch the action in High Definition".

Just what is High Definition viewing on television?

According to Peter Wong, an electronics expert, High Definition television
is also known as HDTV or simply HD.

"It refers to the HD television's picture which has resolution substantially
higher than the traditional television system. HD has one or two million pixels
per frame, roughly five times that of Standard Definition television".

Standard Definition television is also known as SDTV or SD.

NEW TELEVISION STANDARD

The owner of an electrical appliances outlet in Rawang in the state of
Selangor, who wished to be known as Kenneth, said the sales of LCD and LED
televisions at his shop began to pick up several months before the start of the
World Cup Tournament.

"In the one week before the World Cup alone, I managed to sell 20 units of
flat screen LCD televisions. The volume of sale for LED sets is lower as the
LEDs are more expensive", he said.

The popular sets are that of 40-inch type, he said.

He said the price of 'unbranded' 40-inch televisions is much cheaper at the
average of RM1,500 (uS$455) each while the branded ones are priced about RM2,500
(US$758) each. As for the LED units, they are more expensive averaging some
RM5,000 (US$1,515)each.

(LED television is light emitting diode television while the LCD type is
liquid crystal display television).

Wong said, "A High Definition television is a new television standard
utilizing digital technology to broadcast superior pictures and sound".

He said the first High Definition television hit the market in 1998 and
locally, a satellite television station has been offering channels in High
Dimension since early this year.

SALES INCREASED

Meanwhile, the electronic retailers see the World Cup tournament as a unique
opportunity to raise their sales as more customers will purchase televisions to
watch the sporting extravaganza.

James Ng, the manager of an electronic store here said more customers are
showing their interest in buying a new or better television due to the World
Cup.

"For the World Cup Tournament, our LCD television sales is going up. We are
expecting to sell more when the World Cup starts," he told this writer early
this month.

Ng said he usually sells five to eight televisions everyday, but this has
doubled lately.

"People can only watch the World Cup matches once in every four years, so
the customers are focusing on bigger and high-quality televisions like LCD,
Plasma and LED televisions although these are expensive", he said.

However the sales volume is expected to return to normal after the World Cup
tournament ends, he added.
