Jayant Patel guilty of killing patients

Former surgeon Jayant Patel has been found guilty of killing three patients and
permanently injuring another.
A Brisbane Supreme Court jury returned the verdicts on Tuesday after about 50 hours
of deliberation.
Patel had pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court in Brisbane to the manslaughter of
Mervyn Morris, Gerardus Kemps and James Phillips.
He had also pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Vowles.
The charges relate to his time as director of surgery at the Bundaberg Base Hospital
between 2003 and 2005.
Justice John Byrne adjourned the sentencing until Thursday morning and remanded
Patel in custody until then.
Patel was stony-faced as the verdicts were announced.
His wife Kishoree, who has been present each day for the duration of the trial, left
the court in tears as her husband was led from the dock into the cells.
