seminar on the Le dynasty (1428-1788)

Hanoi (VNA) – A seminar on the Le dynasty (1428-1788) will be held in Hanoi
on July 3 to mark the 550 years since King Le Thanh Tong ascended the thrown.

A number of reports will be presented at the seminar highlighting the dynasty’s
role in the founding of the country as well as the part it played in creating the
capital city of Thang Long-Hanoi .

In 1428, after the victory over the Chinese Ming invaders, Le Loi took the throne
as King Le Thai To, reclaimed the country of Dai Viet and set up the capital in
Dong Kinh, Thang Long. Later, 27 successive Kings of the dynasty also chose Thang
Long as their royal capital.

King Le Thai To began the later Le dynasty which lasted for 361 years, the
longest-lasting dynasty in Vietnam ’s feudal history.

During this period, most kings paid attention to developing the country’s
economy, its culture and defence, making Dai Viet one of the most powerful
countries in Southeast Asia .

In economics, the kings protected villagers rights to own land and encouraged
handicraft villages. Traditional crafts then blossomed in 36 streets of the
capital.

The kings encouraged trading and the use of coin and regulated domestic trading
activities.

The Le dynasty also paid a lot of attention to the nation’s culture and
education.

According to history, 102 official examinations were held under the reign of the
24 kings with 1,770 becoming successful, 61 percent of all those who sat
examinations during the feudal regime, which provided the country with a core
group of knowledgeable scholars.

Together with literature, research on history and geography began the country’s
first historical and geographic records. Mathematics were also applied when
measuring land and estimating materials for construction.

Le Thanh Tong, who ruled between 1460-1497, was the most prominent of all the Le
rulers and one of the greatest emperors in Vietnamese history. He is also one of
the most celebrated writers and poets in Vietnam ’s history.

The crowning achievement of Le Thanh Tong was the Hong Duc Code, a legal code
which provided women with legal and property rights, which was rare in many other
countries at that time.

King Le Thanh Tong instituted a wide range of governmental, legal and land reforms.
He also reduced the power of the nobles and the degree of corruption in the
government.

Under his reign, Confucianism also developed strongly. Thanh Tong encouraged the
spread of Confucian values throughout Vietnam by having a “ Temple of
Literature ” built in every province.

The seminar, one of the activities to celebrate the 1,000 th anniversary of
Thang Long-Hanoi, is expected to attract 500 delegates.

It will also contribute to the joint efforts of domestic and foreign
organisations to send a proposal to UNESCO to honour King Le Thanh Tong as a
world cultural celebrity.-Enditem
