WALHI REJECTS CPO FACTORY IN MUKOMUKO DISTRICT

Mukomuko, Bengkulu, July 23 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Environment Forum (Walhi) for Bengkulu has rejected the presence of PT Daria Dharma Pratama which is building a palm oil factory in Mukomuko district, Bengkulu, arguing the project would cause river pollution.

"Actually, Walhi rejects not only PT Daria Dharma Pratama (DDP) but also all oil palm plantation firms in this district," Wahli activist Barlian said here on Friday.

He said that it was no secret that all factories in Mukumuko were throing their wastes into the rivers. Barlian said that the disposal of industrial wastes into the rivers caused damage to the ecology and hampered local fish to breed.

"We are trying to reduce the impact of the liquid waste disposal into rivers by factories," he said.

In the meantime, the head of Air Bikuk village in Pondok Suguh subdistrict, Mislawati, said the local people were still using water from the Gambir river for their daily needs but the Gambir river also being used by PT DDP as a waste dumping site.

"Farmers use water from the river for their daily needs, including the need to irrigate their cultivation fields," she said.
