Three-day non-lethal weapons executive seminar begins

DHAKA,Bangladesh, July 23 (BSS) - A three-day 'Non-lethal Weapons Executive Seminar' jointly organized by the Bangladesh Navy and US Marine Corps Forces Pacific today started at Radisson Hotelin the city.

Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Ziaur Rahman inaugurated theseminar as the chief guest in the morning.

Besides, Bangladesh and the USA, 12 other pacific countries are taking part in the seminar including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea,Philippines, East Timor, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

Air Marshal Ziaur Rahman said, this very important event would help improve capacity of the armed forces and other security agencies of all participating countries to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and peacekeepingoperations.

He hoped resource persons and participants would discuss and learn from each other utilization of non-lethal weapons and tactics to maintain peace and seek new ways to handle unrest in peacekeeping operations scenarios and other situations involvingcivilians.

The seminar will be presented a multi-lateral forum with discussion of non-lethal tactics, techniques and procedures, equipment, rules of engagement, law of war and planning method,the organizers told BSS.

They said, main objective of the seminar is to promote the use of non-lethal weapons to minimize loss of lives and damage to infrastructure as well as seeking new ways to handle unrest in order to prevent or stop human rights violation during any peacekeeping operations.
