Feni EPZ will create about one lakh jobs: BEPZA chairman

FENI, Bangladesh, July 22 (BSS)- Chairman of Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authorities (BEPZA) Brigadier General Jamil Ahmed Khan today said the proposed Export Processing Zone (EPZ) would usher a new prospect for economic progress of the district.

The EPZ would generate employment opportunity for 70,000 to one lakh people, he said while exchanging views with cross section people on establishment of the new economic zone atDeputy Commissioner's conference room.

Leaders of local chamber, press club, trade bodies, professional organizations, public representatives and landownersattended the meeting.

Reminding the benefit of the EPZ for people of Feni district as well as the country, BEPZA chairman said the people who are opposing the project virtually have no land in the area proposedfor establishing the zone.

He assured that the landowners would be given very fair compensation and necessary steps would be taken for theirrehabilitation in other areas.

The dependents of the landowners would be given service inthe industrial units according to their eligibility, he added.

The government earlier proposed to establish the EPZ on 526 cares of land, he said adding considering the total damage oflocal people, the size of the zone has been reduced to 280 acres.

He said about 20 acres of land has already been selected to rehabilitate 24 families of four villages who would loss theirland due to construction of the EPZ.
