SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- The following are the major cultural and tourist festivals to be held in South Korea in August.

* Busan Sea Festival
When: Aug. 1-9
Where: Haeundae and other major beaches in Busan
The Busan Sea Festival has opened on Aug. 1 every year since 1996 on various
beaches of Busan, including Haeundae and Gwanganli. The festival in the largest
port city of South Korea consists of various programs and cultural performances
showing the city's attractions. Programs include an international beach dance
festival, a rock music festival, an international beach skateboard competition,
hip-hop and magic festivals and activities such as swimming, yachting and
windsurfing.

* Gangjin Celadon Festival
When: Aug. 7-15
Where: Gangjin, South Jeolla Province
Goryeo celadon is one of Korea's unique cultural assets and enjoys international
acclaim. For those who want to see for themselves the secrets of making Goryeo
celadon, a trip to Gangjin, the birthplace and a major production base of the
pottery in South Jeolla Province, will certainly be a good experience.
Programs will include workshops, exhibitions, performances of traditional and
contemporary music, dance and other artistic genres as well as "do-it-yourself"
events.
A sea parade of 50 ships in the waters off Gangjin Bay will enhance the festive
mood on opening day.

* Chuncheon Puppet Festival
When: Aug. 9-15
Where: Chuncheon Puppet Theatre and other venues in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province
Chuncheon, the capital of Gangwon Province, has become a mecca for puppet dramas
with the opening of the Chuncheon Puppet Theatre and the Puppet Drama Museum. A
total of 80 professional puppet drama troupes from six countries will give
performances. Foreign troupes will visit from Germany, France, Japan, Belgium and
Russia.

* Jochiwon Peach Festival
When: Aug. 7-8
Where: Jochiwon, South Chungcheong Province
The peach is one of the fruits that represent summer in Korea. There are a number
of peach festivals held across Korea from July through September. The Peach
Festival in Jochiwon will offer cooking shows with peaches, performances of folk
plays, peach picking, a singing contest, a peach-eating competition and facial

* Hansan Daecheop (Great Battle of Hansan) Festival
When: Aug. 11-15
Where: Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province
A re-enactment of a heroic sea battle held 417 years ago will be conducted from
Aug. 11 in the sea off Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province. In the Hansan
Daecheop, or Great Battle of Hansan, Korean naval ships led by Adm. Yi Sun-shin
destroyed an invading Japanese armada. Over 100 ships will take part in the
re-enactment, which will be the highlight of the commemorative Hansan Daecheop
Festival.

* Seoul Fringe Festival
When: Aug. 12-28
Where: Seoul
The Seoul Fringe Festival will provide a showcase of independent artists.
Individual artists or groups can freely perform drama, dance, mime, music and
arts in the festival, which will allow both the performers and the audience to
enjoy the freedom of expression and selection. Performances will take place in
various venues like small theaters, live clubs, galleries, streets and the subway
station near Hongik University in western Seoul.

* International Bodypainting festival
When: Aug. 27-28
Where: Daegu
A fantastic event of world's best bodypainting artists will be held in Kolon
Field Concert Hall in Duryu Park, Daegu. Programs will include a fantasy makeup
contest, a bodypainting contest, diverse performances of music, dance and magic
and exhibitions. Visitors will be able to receive free services such as face
painting and nail art. A spectacular fireworks show will add to the festive mood
of the festival.
