Heat comes to Western Kazakhstan

Uralsk, July 29, 2010 (Khabar) - The hot weather that affected the central regions of Russia has reached the city of Uralsk. Two days ago, specialists registered a temperature of +51 degrees centigrade in the city which is unusually hot for this area. Those suffering from high blood pressure and cardio-vascular diseases are especially affected by the hot weather. The regional cardiological centre has no free beds left so doctors have to accommodate sick people in the corridors. The ambulance service of the West Kazakhstan region is now operating more than ever before with patients delivered to hospitals non-stop.

Bibizhan Sarsekenova, cardiologist:
- There is a difficult situation with these patients. We have a lack of space. The cardiological centre has only 120 beds and 20 beds are in the surgical department. Up to 30 patients are now being accommodated in corridors. We are unable to provide these people with first aid and send them back home because high blood pressure is accompanied with nasal bleeding which is why we cannot just provide them with 30-minute aid.

Domestic pets are also suffering from the heat just like people. Sown areas have been burnt out. Bears living in the local zoo are being doused with cold water 3 times a day. Zoo officials say that the bears are not asking for food anymore as a cold shower is all they want now.

Tatyana Schilling, weather forecaster:
- In the next two weeks, our region will remain under the influence of a high and powerful anticyclone. It will bring clear skies accompanied by hot weather. The night temperature will be between +22 and +27 degrees centigrade while day temperatures will be between +34 and +39 degrees centigrade. In some areas of the region, the temperature may rise to +43 degrees. Over the past two months, the city of Uralsk saw a maximum of +40 degrees centigrade while the Akzhaik and Zhanibek districts of the region saw temperatures increase to +43 degrees.

Two days ago, thermometers in the city showed a temperature of +51 degrees centigrade. Weather forecasters also explained the difference between the actual weather and the forecasts by the fact that thermometers are set up in open sites in the sun. According to international weather forecast rules, the air temperature should be measured in the shade. The 42 degree forecast from KazHydroMet is also significant with weather forecasters saying a decrease in the temperature may be expected only from the middle of August.
