US-ASEAN Business Council ready to back removal of Thailand from PWL
BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) – The US-ASEAN Business Council is ready to support the proposed removal of Thailand from Washington’s Priority Watch List (PWL) on Intellectual Property Piracy, according to Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot.
Speaking after meeting with council officials, he said Thailand is one of the countries placed on the PWL review list this year because it is able to prevent and suppress intellectual property piracy in various forms without interruption.
Also, Thailand had stepped up its campaign against intellectual property violations and amended the intellectual property protection law.
So, he said, Thailand is expected to be transferred from the PWL to Washington’s Watch List (WL).
Mr Alongkorn revealed the US-ASEAN Business Council still had confidence in the overall picture of the Thai economy.
Although Thailand had experienced political turmoil, the situation eased and began to improve.
In addition, the Thai economy is projected to grow 7.5 per cent with exports set to increase by 19 per cent and the industrial index improving continually. It is expected to result in an increase in international reserves by Bt4.5 trillion.
He said US entrepreneurs had plans to invest in Thailand. Ford Motor, giant vehicle maker in the US, planned to invest more than $450 million in Thailand, particularly building a vehicle production base for export.
A group of US film makers is also set to make many movies in Thailand, Mr Alongkorn said. noting that many entrepreneurs are ready to invest in Thailand. (TNA)
