Mass candle-lighting ceremony marks Queen Sirikit’s 78th birthday

BANGKOK, Aug 12 – Thais from all walks of life lit candles Thursday evening to celebrate her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 78th birthday and to offer blessings and prayers for the Queen.

The prime minister, cabinet members, and the diplomatic corps participated in the auspicious event at Government House.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who presided over the ceremony, said on behalf of cabinet members, senior civil service officials and ordinary Thais that the Thai people felt gratitude to her royal grace and her dedication to help her subjects without discrimination.

The prime minister led them in singing the royal anthem.

In the capital, the event was held simultaneously at Dusit Palace, Ratchaprasong intersection, the Ministry of Education and Sanam Luang ceremonial ground where fireworks displays, lighting up the sky in honour of the beloved queen.

Meanwhile, Thais across the country also participated this auspicious moment at 7.29pm, when the kingdom was illuminated with a sea of candlelights and fireworks at home or at designated venues in all provinces.

Apart from the mass candle lighting, government and private sectors jointly held cultural and art performances nationwide, particularly the surrounding area of Dusit Palace and Ratchadamnoen Avenue in Bangkok, to honour the Queen’s contributions for the well-being of her subjects.
