MERCY MALAYSIA LAUNCHES PAKISTAN FLOOD RELIEF FUND

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Medical Relief Society (MERCY
Malaysia) has launched a disaster fund to provide relief efforts in Pakistan
following its worst floods in 80 years.

Its president, Dr Ahmad Faizal Perdaus said MERCY would help restore the
Pakistani health care services in areas badly-affected by the floods.

"Apart of providing humanitarian and medical aid to flood victims, we hope to
continue assisting the affected communities after the floods subside, especially
on recovery and rehabilitation," he said in a statement Wednesday.

Donations to the fund could be channelled to MERCY Humanitarian Fund Maybank
account number 5621-7950-4126 or to MERCY Malaysia CIMB Bank account number
1424-000-6561053.

He said in collaboration with Pakistan International Medical Association
(PIMA), MERCY had set up two clinics, namely in Nowshera and Charsadda
districts to cater for over 3,000 flood victims.

Each clinic is manned by a local doctor and three medical staff.

"Another MERCY Malaysia team will be deployed to Pakistan Thursday to provide
assistance to the clinics and supply hygiene kits to flood victims as they are
susceptible to water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea.

"We have allocated a budget for 1,000 hygiene kits to be distributed to the
affected communities through selected local organisations and will conduct
briefing sessions on hygiene for them," said Ahmad Faizal.
