Next IAMCR congress to be held in Mexico in 2009 By Md Enamul Haque from Stockholm

STOCKHOLM, July 24 (BSS) - The next congress of International Association for Media and Communication Research(IAMCR) will be held in Mexico in 2009.

The decision was taken at its general assembly held at Aula Magna, one of the largest auditoriums in Nordic countries, on theStockholm University campus yesterday.

The assembly urged media and communication professionals to find out the strategy to face three key challenges, what they said, food crisis, climate change and human rights in the comingdays.

Later, the IAMCR executive body election was held. A total of 698 voters out of a total 786 cast their votes. Professor Annabelle Sreberny (UK) and Professor Ole Prehn (Denmark) have been elected as president and general secretary respectively of20-member committee for the next four years (2008-2012).

Bangladesh Professor Mohammad Sahid Ullah, the lone media and journalism educator from South Asia, has been elected the co-chairperson of IAMCR Law Section.

After the election, the new executive body along with the members of IAMCR was welcomed by Stockholm mayor Sten Nordin atthe City Hall, the venue of distribution of the Nobel Prize.

Earlier, Cho-wen Chu was awarded the IAMCR Prize in Memory of Herbert I. Schiller for his paper "A comparative Review of Media Globalization in China and Taiwan", and Sara Bannerman received the IAMCR Prize in Memory of Dallas W. Smythe for her contribution "Berne Buster: Canada and the Berne Convention,1887- 1908".

The world's leading media scholars with hundreds of professionals from around the globe are gathering in the Swedishcapital from 20.

The IAMCR congress is an international forum where researchers from all parts of the world meet, discuss and exchange ideas on contemporary global media and communicationissues.

This year's theme of IAMCR congress is "Media and Global Divides" which covers many fields including globalization, religion and peace communication and role of media andcommunication in crisis management in the turbulent world.

More than 950 leading media researchers and professionalsfrom 85 countries are attending the 26th IAMCR Congress.
