CA stresses women participation at different levels of society, national life

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 25 (BSS) - Chief Adviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed today laid stress on ensuring participation of womenfolk at different levels of society as well as national life to expedite socio-economic progress ofthe country.

"The socio-economic development of the country is not made possible keeping a huge portion of the population out of the main stream of development process," he said The Chief Adviser said this while inaugurating a programme on Awareness Creation Campaign on Women's Development at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capitalthis afternoon.

Women and Children Affairs Adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury chaired the function while secretary of the ministryRokeya Sultana gave welcome speech.

Calling upon all to take steps from their respective positions for the uplift of womenfolk, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said the participation of women at all spheres of society and economy have to be increased toaccelerate national development.

"We have to ensure rights of the women along with protecting them from becoming victims of disrespect and embarrassment attheir work place," he added.

He said everybody has to work unitedly applying their judgment, belief and wisdom to remove negative impression onwomen education.

About the country's women education, he said the government has attached special importance on women development as well as women education. Success in achieving gender parity in primary and secondary education levels is one of the examples of it, headded.

Mentioning the role of different government-private bodies, women organization, civil society and the development partners for women uplift, he said MDG-3 Champion network has been established in various countries across the globe as a special effort to reorganize the women folk aimed at assisting womenempowerment efforts.

The Chief Adviser said success of the torch of MDG-3 depends on the empowerment of women in different socio-economic sectors and work places and on the progress of their position withinfamily, society and individual levels.

Referring to a conference of the heads of state and government to be held in New York before UN General Assembly in September next on the attainment of the goals of the MDG, he expressed his confidence that a positive report on Bangladesh'swomen development situation will be upheld there.

Earlier, the Women and Children Affairs Adviser Rasheda KChowdhury handed over the torch of MDG-3 to the Chief Adviser.

Advisers, Special Assistants to the Chief Adviser, heads of development partners, diplomats, representatives of differentwomen organizations and NGOs were present.
