Singapore FM lauds Dhaka's disaster management policies

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 25 (BSS) - Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo today lauded the disaster management policies of Bangladesh at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting in Singapore.

George Yeo, who was chairing the conference, said Bangladesh's disaster management policies provided examples for many countries to learn from, according to a message receivedhere.

Adviser for Foreign Affairs Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury isleading the Bangladesh delegation at the meeting.

Dr Iftekhar in his statement explained how the impact of Cyclone Sidr was mitigated by early preventive action andeffective relief and rehabilitation efforts thereafter.

Myanmar Foreign Minister U Nyan Win in his remarks stated that Myanmar had indeed drawn lessons from Bangladesh in dealingwith the after-effects of Cyclone Nargis.

Dr. Iftekhar Chowdhury, in several statements through the day, explained how Bangladesh has been able to counter terrorism through measures that included poverty-alleviation and theempowerment of women.

A total of 27 foreign ministers including US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura, Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters attended theconference.
