Ganges-Padma, Brahmaputra-Jamuna continue to rise steadily

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 25 (BSS)- Swelled by heavy upstream rains the Ganges-Padma and the Brahmaputra-Jamuna continued to rise steadily along with some flashy rivers in the northeast like theSurma.

The Jamuna may slow down but may cross its danger level (DL) downstream at Sirajganj in next 24 or 48 hours, a FloodForecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) source said today.

The Jamuna after rising for two days may wane, he said, adding the rains on the Brahmaputra basin upstream are likely todecrease to cause its slowdown.

But the Padma will continue swelling further, menacing the low-lying areas with inundation in the districts of Munshiganj and Manikganj and the areas of Dohar and Nawabganj in Dhakadistrict.

With further rainfall upstream in the Ganges basin in West Bengal and Bihar states of India, the mighty Padma is likely to menace the low-lying areas downstream in the three Bangladeshdistricts.

The inundation of these low-lying areas may continue for thenext 24-72 hours, a FFWC forecast said.

Saiful Hossain, executive engineer at FFWC, told BSS that chances of the Padma causing further havoc in its downstream areas was unlikely if the Jamuna starts slowing down in next twodays.

Both the rivers join together a little upstream nearGoalundo, where the Padma had crossed its DL yesterday.

Heavy rainfall continued over the northern and northeastern areas of the country and in the neighbouring sub-Himalayan WestBengal, Assam and Meghalaya states of India.

The rains reached over 1000 mm in Cherapunji until today since July 21, helping the rain-fed rivers down the hills in northeastern Bangladesh go in spate, inundating low-lying areas in the districts of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrakona and Sherpur, which may increase further with more rains expected upstream, theFFWC forecast said.

The FFWC river positions showed the Padma was flowing 22cm above its DL at Goalundo, 29cm at Bhagyakul, the distributory of Padma, the Kobadak at Jhikargacha was flowing 04 cm above DL, the Surma at Kanaighat was 31cm above DL and 73cm above DL atSunamganj.

The Sarigowain at Sarighat up 14 cm of DL, Bhugai at Nakuagaon 235cm above DL, Jadukata at Lorergarh 07 cm above DL, the Someswari at Durgapur 88cm above DL and Kangsha at Jariajanjail was flowing 130cm above its DL, the FFWC reportsaid.
