WDB, joint forces reinforce Sirajganj town protection embankment as Jamuna rises

SIRAJGANJ, Bangladesh, July 25 (BSS)- The WDB backed by the joint forces has started reinforcing the Town Protection Embankment (TPE) on its eastern flank in Hossainpur Malshapara areas with geo textiles and sandbags as a swelling Jamuna has started menacingit after flooding a vast area and chars in five upazilas.

Water Development Board (WDB) officials said the Jamuna, buoyed by onrush of water from the upstream, was flowing 10 cmbelow its danger level, which it may cross tonight.

High officials of the joint forces today visited erosion and flood-affected Biara, Charmalshapara and Char Mirpur areas by speedboat and inspected the defence line to protect the TPE fromerosion.

The WDB sources said they have continued maintenance work and vigil on all the areas including the three newly constructedalternative embankments.

Local control room sources told BSS that over 100 villages in 30 unions of Kazipur, Sirajganj Sadar, Belkuchi, Chouhali and Shahzadpur upazilas have been flooded. But no reports of damagewere available so far.

The district administration and upazila administrationofficials have been monitoring and visiting the affected areas.

The district administration has opened control room to collect information on damage and flood-affected people and passinformation to the people.

Local people said their sufferings have increased due to flooding in the affected upazilas, where boats have become onlymeans of transportation.
