PM upbeat about economic growth this year

BANGKOK, Aug 17 (TNA) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday expressed confidence that the Thai economy would definitely grow as much as 6-7 per cent this year.

Speaking after presiding over the annual industry award presentation ceremony in 2010, he said the economy expanded up to 12 per cent in the first quarter of this year and is very likely to grow at least 10 per cent in the first half of the year.

Given these figure, he was confident the economic growth for the whole of this year would definitely reach 6-7 per cent.

He said the Thai and Asian economies are growing most rapidly and at the highest rate. The regional economy is considered a key driving force for the global economic growth, he observed.

From now on, he said, competition particularly in Asia and ASEAN would intensify as a result of the implementation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) agreement.

With the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015, there will be a liberalization of the movement of people, labour, and locations of goods manufacturing.

Mr Abhisit said the industrial sector is a key driver in the continued growth of the Thai economy. All parties concerned need to improve the competence of
workers urgently in preparation for stiff competition in the future.

Labour development must be carried out to ensure its quality to reduce the production costs of entrepreneurs.

Simultaneously, entrepreneurs must accelerate improving their competency and the economic management, and bring innovations for production to ensure products are attractive or meet the market demand.

More importantly, industrial operators must give higher priority to environmental protection and social responsibility to ensure sustainable economic development. (MCOT online news)
