MUSLIMS MUST MASTER KNOWLDGE ON ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT

MUAR, Malaysia, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- It is important for Muslims to master knowledge on economic management to ensure their continued progress, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also United Malays National Organisation (Umno) deputy
president, said good economic management was the best recipe for Muslims to move
ahead economically.

"If we can manage the economy well, our efforts to master other fields important
for the progress of Muslims can be achieved," he said after handing over tithes
contributed by Agrobank to needy folk and orphans from around the Pagoh
parliamentary constituency here Thursday.

He said good economic management was also important to realise Malaysia's goal
to be a developed country by 2020 (Vision 2020).

According to Muhyiddin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Pagoh, the
economic growth of 8.9 per cent recorded in the second half of this year was
proof that the nation was on the right track to achieve its economic goals.

The target now, he said, was to achieve six per centy GDP growth annualy for the
next 10 years so that Vision 2020 could be achieved and per capita income
doubled from US7,000 (RM22,000) to US15,000 (RM47,000), as called for by the New
Economic Model.

"We want the fruits of our economic growth to be enjoyed by all,
irrespective whether they live in rural or urban areas," he said, adding that
political stability was another important factor towards achieving the objectives.
