UK to send observers during local body polls

DHAKA,Bangladesh, July 28 (BSS) - The United Kingdom (UK) along with European Union will send election observers to watch the next local body polls here as per invitation of the ElectionCommission.

Newly appointed British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Stephen Nicholas Evans said this while he paid a courtesy call onChief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed at his office here today.

After the call on, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim while briefing the journalists said Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed welcomed the new British envoy and hoped that the existing Dhaka- London excellent bilateral relations will be strengthenedfurther during his tenure.

The Chief Adviser said Bangladesh now needs more access to global market including the UK for sharing trade that will help a lot in country's poverty alleviation. He recalled his last meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in London a fewmonths back that touched important bilateral issues.

Referring to climate change and global warming, Dr Fakhruddin said Bangladesh will be affected due to melting of ice in the Himalayas as well as rising sea level. The country needs assistance to build a long-term infrastructure in the coastalbelt to this end, he added.

Pointing to country's success in achieving MDG, Dr Fakhruddin said Bangladesh has achieved remarkable progress in gender parity and women empowerment. It will be a mid-income country withinnext 15 years, he hoped.

Dr Fakhruddin said curry industry in the UK will be benefited by recruiting Bangladeshi skilled workers who are taking training in the catering institutes here. He said the government hasundertaken a strong stand against terrorism.

The Chief Adviser said the state of emergency has been relaxed where it is necessary so that the local body electioncampaign can be conducted smoothly.

Stephen said the UK government will provide 50 million poundsterling for addressing the climate change issues.

The British envoy appreciated two-way flow of trade between Dhaka and London and hoped that it will be expanded further. Both the nation is walking together in the path of democracy, peaceand development, he added.

Referring to bilateral relations Stephen said during the lastfew decades it has been improving gradually.

He said a UK minister will visit Bangladesh within a few days. Bangladeshis are making significant contribution to theeconomy, culture and politics of the UK, he added.

Stephen appreciated the success of the government in completing the grand task of preparing the voter ID cards withphotograph within a short time.
