Govt. determined to eliminate corruption: Rasheda

DDHAKA,Bangladesh, July 28 (BSS) - Adviser for Primary and Mass Education Rasheda K Chowdhury today said the present caretaker government is determined to bring discipline by eliminatingcorruption from all sectors, including education.

The government is going to promulgate an ordinance to check corruption and ensure right to information, she said whilespeaking as the chief guest at a roundtable in the city.

The ordinance is at the final stage now and it will bepromulgated soon, the adviser said.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) organised the roundtable titled 'Problems of Primary Education Management andWays to Solutions" at the CIRDAP auditorium.

Presided over by TIB Chairman Professor Mozaffar Ahmed, the meeting was also addressed, by Primary and Mass Education Secretary Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, former Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Maniruzzaman Miah, former adviser of caretaker government M Hafizuddin Khan, Director General of Primary Education Department Nazrul Islam Khan, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Associate Professor of Dhaka University Education and Research Institute Abdul Halim and Government Primary School Teachers Association President AbdulAwal Talukder, among others.

Rasheda K Chowdhury said the government is working relentlessly to improve quality of education and reduce rich-poor gap in all spheres. Teacher-student ration in primary education is better now, but it would have to be improved further, sheadded.

The government has taken special measures for education of children in char and haor areas, she said and added the government has decentralised the activities of Primary and MassEducation Ministry.

The adviser said the government is considering introduction of 'Primary Education' cadre to improve quality of primaryeducation.

Prof Maniruzzaman Miah said suggested enhancing salaries of the teachers of government and community primary teachers andregular promotion of teachers.

Prof Mozaffar Ahmed that expected quality and service in primary education could not be ensured for various irregularitiesin primary education management and corruption.

He suggested radical changes in administration to eliminatethe existing problems.
