Bangladesh telecom reforms receive appreciation at world forum

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 28 (BSS) - Bangladesh's reforms in telecommunication sector received appreciation at the worldtelecommunication forum.

This was stated by Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Posts and Telecommunications Ministry Brigadier General (retd) MA Malek to BSS today following his return here last night after attending a seminar on policies on telecommunications atthe US capital in Washington DC.

MA Malek was the only representative of Bangladesh at the sixth international seminar arranged by the Minority and theTelecommunications Council.

The two-day conference was participated by broadcasting, cable caster, telecom company, research supplier, banks, mediabrokerage, law firms and engineering firms.

The conference was briefed on different steps along with reforms taken by Bangladesh on its telecommunications sector,Malek said.

Brigadier General (retd) MA Malek also held separate meetings with high officials of US Federal Telecommunication Commission, Dr Ahmed Tami, DG of International Telecommunicationand Satellite organisation and other organisations.

Malek said he had fruitful discussions with the US officials on how US could help Bangladesh to bring its telecommunications, including satellite system under latest technology.

Besides, reduction of call rates in Bangladesh telecom organisation, cuttting down of connection fee and internet charges were put up before the conference. He said though many countries have taken such steps but some are followingBangladeshi steps in these regard.

On use of VOIP the special assistant said it was difficult to prevent corruption through VOIP because we lack adequate equipment to monitor satellite technology. We do not even have our own satellite. I have taken up the issue with the US, Canadian and Australian experts how to introduce satellite systemwith their assistance, Malek said.

When submarine cables are disconnected we also suffer due to it. What should be the alternative to it was also discussed withthe experts in the conference," Malek said.

He pointed out that the capacity of Bangladesh's submarine cable was 24 Gigabyte. "But only six Gigabyte was being utilised by us costing us much to use it. Cost would automatically comedown if we could utilise its full capacity," he added.

Telephone charges would come down further from 15 paisa at peak hour and 10 paisa at off peak hour per minute. This rate would come down further if telecommunication network could be expand around the country via submarine cable and satellite system, reaching its benefit to the people, Malek further toldBSS.
