Indian Army Chief calls on President

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 29 (BSS) - Visiting Chief of Indian Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor today called on President Professor DrIajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban today.

Welcoming the Indian army chief to Bangabhaban the President expressed his satisfaction at the existing relations betweenBangladesh and India.

He also hopped that Indian army chief's visit would helpstrengthening the relations between Dhaka and Delhi.

Professor Iajuddin observed that Bangladesh and Indian armies could share their experiences in various fields and take part in join trainings which would help develop and strengthenexisting friendly relations in the days to come.

He apprised the Indian Army Chief of the Bangladesh's success in checking militancy in the country and said the peopleof the country never support terrorism.

The President informed General Kapoor about the Bangladesh efforts to strengthen democracy in the country and its preparation for holding a credible general election by Decemberthis year.

He also underscored the need for working Bangladesh and India together to face the challenge of global warming and arsenic problem as the issues are highly vulnerable for both thecountries.

Indian army chief showed his keen interest to avail different training facilities in Bangladesh for Indian army officers and said Bangladesh and Indian armies could exchange training and share experiences in different fields particularlyin international peacekeeping.

He praised the Bangladesh army for its excellence indisaster management and its role in facing natural calamities.

General Deepak said Bangladesh and India have been facing similar challenges in the field of development and survival, particularly in poverty alleviation, curbing terrorism and facingnatural calamities.

He said that the two countries could work togethereffectively in facing the problems successfully.

The Indian army chief who took part in 1971 operations, launched for the liberation of Bangladesh, when he was a captain of Indian army, also praised Bangladeshi people for their courageand patience.

Indian High Commissioners Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty, among others, was present. Secretary of the President's Office Md Sirajul Islam, Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohammad Ruhul Amin and President's Press Secretary Abdul AwalHowleder were present.
