Singaporean investments in Bangladesh to increase: Envoy

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 29 (BSS) - Singaporean High Commissioner to Bangladesh Verghese Mathews today said investment from Singapore to Bangladesh, which is already over $ 1 billion, is likely toincrease in the near future.

The visiting High Commissioner, who is headquartered in the Singaporean capital, said this during a call on Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at the foreign office, according to apress release.

Referring to his meeting with Singaporean foreign minister George Yeo during the ASEAN Regional Forum Meeting in Singapore, Dr Chowdhury said both had showed keen interest in "widening and deepening political and economic relations." Bangladesh had recently held an investment forum in Singapore which was largely attended by Singaporean business houses andthey were eager to invest in Bangladesh.

"Singapore is an extremely successful economy. Bangladesh is also a country with huge potentials. I am sure our cooperation will bring us both great benefits," Dr Iftekhar told mediaafterwards.

`First Postage Stamp Day' tomorrow DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 28 (BSS)- The Postal Department has decided to observe the `First Postage Stamp Day' tomorrow marking therelease of the first postage stamp 37 years ago.

The Mujibnagar Government released a set of eight postage stamps on July 29 in 1971 which had played an important role increating opinion in favour of the Liberation War.

According to the Postal Department, from now on the department will observe the Postage Stamp Day on July 29 eachyear.

The releasing of the postage stamps of Bangladesh was a rare incident at that time as there was no currency of the countrystruggling for the independence.

To mark the day, Bangladesh Post Office will release a special folder of Taka 10 and a souvenir sheet comprising eightpostage stamps of Taka 50 tomorrow.

Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Post and Telecommunications Brigadier General (retd) MA Malek and Post and Telecommunications Secretary Iqbal Mahmood will inaugurate exhibitions of the postage stamps simultaneously at Chittagongand Dhaka GPOs at 10 am.
