Surabaya, E Java, Indonesia, Sept 20 (ANTARA) - A number of Belgian businessmen intended to invest US$12 million in East Java's marble and granite mining industry, Governor Soekarwo said here on Monday.

"When I visited Belgium I met with 10 local businessmen who intended to invest US$12 million in East Java," he said commenting on the results of his visit to Belgium along with a number of central government officials on Sept 11-14.

"During the meeting I promoted three business fields to European Union through Belgium. They are granite and marble mining, agricultural commodities and tourist sites," he said.

"Belgium is a gateway to European Union. That's why we hope the promotion could be accepted by the European community," he said.

From Belgium, the governor continued his trip to Switzerland where he met with leaders of cement maker Holcim.

"We talked about Holcim's plan to invest US$440 million in Tuban (East Java)," he said after a plenary meeting at the East Java provincial legislative assembly.

He said a number of businessmen from Belgium, Switzerland and Italy will soon visit East Java to explore business potentials.
