Japan Govt to Aid Universities to Increase Foreign Students

Tokyo, July 30 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government will provide intensive support to 30 universities to achieve Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's goal of drastically increasing foreign students in Japan, government officials said Tuesday.

The government will choose the universities and actively help them acquire excellent students from foreign countries, the officials said,explaining an outline of envisioned measures on foreign students.

The ministries of education, foreign affairs and industry will jointly devise specific programs to realize Fukuda's goal of more than doubling foreign students in Japan, to 300,000 by 2020 from the current120,000.

The goal is part of Japan's global strategy aimed at promoting the movements of people, goods, capital and information between Japan and therest of the world, particularly Asia.

At the selected 30 universities, the number of courses for English-speaking students will be increased sharply, according to theoutline.

The outline also called for expanding admissions of students in September and increasing teachers from abroad. Other measures include simpler procedures to extend the periods of stay and greater support forinternship and job searches by foreign students.
