ADMIRAL AGUS UNDERGOES FIT-AND-PROPER TEST AT PARLIAMENT

Jakarta, Sept 23 (ANTARA) - Admiral Agus Suhartono underwent a
fit-and property carried out by members of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I here Thursday.

In the test, the admiral being proposed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as a candidate for the Indonesian defense forces chief, promised that he would modernize the country's main weaponry in the future.

"One of my priorities is to revitalize and modernize the main weaponry system to strengthen the battle and defense power," Admiral Agus Suhartono said.

The modernization and revitalization would be carried out in stage in accordance with the available budget, according to him.

Old armaments would be scrapped, he said.

With the modernization and revitalization of the weaponry, the Indonesian Defense Force (TNI) is expected to be more professional in facing various threats.

More weapons would also be procured to strengthen the Army, Navy and Air Forces, he said.
On September 3, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wrote a letter to the House on the nomination of Suhartono as a sole candidate for the military chief to replace Gen. Djoko Santoso who will soon start retirement.

Some lawmakers hailed President Yudhoyono's decision to choose Suhartono as the next military chief.

"His decision to choose Admiral Agus Suhartono is right," Yorrys Raweyai of the Golkar Party faction in the House said early this month.

According to the schedule of the committee for the transfer of post of the Indonesian military chief, President Yudhoyono will induct a new military chief on Sept 29.
