Govt. committed to ensuring fearless voting environment, says CA

SHAHJADPUR (Sirajganj),Bangladesh, July 31 (BSS)- Chief Adviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed today said the present government is pledged- bound to ensure such an environment for the people conducive to exercising the right of franchise without fear and intimidation.

"Casting vote is a citizen right and you will exercise the rights without fear under a peaceful environment which will beensured by the government," he said.

The Chief Adviser said this while addressing a local level dialogue titled " National Dialogue at the Local Level to Transition to Democracy" at the Rabindra Kachari Bari auditoriumhere.

Commerce Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman moderated the dialogue also attended by LGRD Adviser Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal, Communications Adviser Maj. Gen. (retd) Ghulam Quader and LawAdviser A F Hassan Ariff.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sirajganj gave the address of welcome in the about two-hour dialogue participated by localelite and professionals.

The Chief Adviser said the government is trying its level best to ensure all parties' participation in the upcoming general election and expressed the hope that the BNP will join theongoing dialogue with the government.

Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed made a clarion call to the people to exercise their right of franchise for the honest and competent candidates to bring about a qualitative change to the country'spolitical culture.

In this context, he also put emphasis on bringing changes to the country's existing political culture saying honest, dedicated and competent candidates would come forward to participate in thepolls if changes could be made in the process.

Listing different steps taken by the government to this end, he said the present government has brought some important amendments to the electoral rules and the code of conduct forbringing changes to the country's political culture.

Referring to participation of war criminals in the upcoming general polls, he said their participation in the election is not expected. "Our time is limited, so we are creating a field foryou so that you can proceed on in this regard," he added.

The Chief Adviser, however, said no steps were taken even bythe elected governments during the last 37 years in this regard.

There is a provision in the RPO (Representation of People's Order) that any person convicted of the war crimes would not beable to participate in the polls, he added.

Regarding release of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, the Chief Adviser said the government has an identical stance on the issue like former PrimeMinister Sheikh Hasina.

"We have issued a notice during the temporary release of Sheikh Hasina saying that the government has the same stand aboutKhaleda Zia," he said.

About the government's ongoing anti-corruption drive, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said the drive was given a nationwide shape to check corruption at all levels including the grassroots. He saidthe anti-corruption dive is a continuous process.

As many as 43 people belonging to various professions took part in the dialogue. The speakers categorically demanded of the government to hold the upazila election prior to the upcomingnational polls.

They also demanded the government to take necessary steps so that the nation was not compelled to go back to the pre OneEleven period.

Referring to the government's ongoing dialogue, he said the main objective of the dialogue is to create a consensus among all ahead of the upcoming election. He said the next polls would bean example for democracy.

The local elite and professionals raised various demands to the Chief Adviser that included strengthening the milk vita project, providing loan facilities to the weavers, supplying gas to Sirajganj and Pabna, setting up a veterinary college and hospital at Sirajganj, construction of Bogra-Sirajganj rail lineand formation of task force at local levels to check crimes.

In replying, the Chief Adviser said that the government wouldconsider the legitimate demands of the people in phases.
