CA leaves for Colombo tomorrow

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 31 (BSS) - Chief Adviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed leaves here for Colombo tomorrow night to attend the 15th SAARC Summit in the Sri Lankan capital August 2-3.

He will be accompanied by his wife Neena Ahmed.

Dr Fakhruddin will depart Dhaka for Singapore en route toColombo by a Singapore Airlines flight.

He will arrive at Sri Lanka International Airport on Friday (August 1) morning. He will be received by the Prime Minister ofSri Lanka and Bangladesh High Commissioner in Colombo.

Dr Fakhruddin is going to attend the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Summit for the second time as head of the government. He attended the 14th SAARC Summit inNew Delhi in April last year.

The chief adviser's entourage will include Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowhdury, Principal Secretary to Chief AdviserAli Imam Majumder and Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim.

On the sidelines of the eight-nation regional summit, the Chief Adviser is expected to hold bilateral meetings with the SAARC heads of state and government including the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan. He will also attend a banquet to be hostedby the President of the host country.

Apart from attending the concluding session on August 3, the Chief Adviser will have lunch at Parliament House and join a retreat with heads of SAARC members state and government. ThePresident of Sri Lanka will receive him at the Parliament House.

Besides, Dr Fakhruddin and Neena Ahmed will attend a dinner hosted by the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka on August 3. He will depart Colombo on August 4 for Dhaka viaSingapore.

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and High Commissioner of Bangladesh will see the Chief Adviser off at the airport. He is expected to arrive at Zia International Airport on August 4night.

Outgoing Chairman of SAARC Dr Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, will open the 15th SAARC summit at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on August 2 when the President of Sri Lanka will make the inauguralstatement.

The Chief Adviser of Bangladesh will address the summit onthe first day of the two-day summit.

Foreign ministry sources said four major agreements - on the SAARC Development Fund, the SAARC standard coordinating board agreement, the SAARC agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and the protocol on Afghanistan's acceptance to the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) - are likely to besigned at the Colombo Summit.

SAARC groups Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, theMaldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
