Journalists for promotion of connectivity among SAARC people

COLOMBO, July 31 (BSS)- The fourth SAARC Journalists' Summit under the theme of "freedom of media in conflict situations" began here today with a call to SAARC member nations to promote connectivity and partnership among people of this region byallowing free movement of journalists and media products.

Sri Lankan Minister for Media and Information Anura Priyadarshana Yapa was the chief guest at the inaugural session of the summit, taking place at a time when the South Asian region is passing through tumultuous changes and perpetration ofconflicts.

The inaugural function was addressed, among others, by President of SAFMA Sri Lankan chapter Lakshman Gunasekara andSAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam.

More than 200 journalists from eight SAARC countries are attending the fourth summit organized by South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) at Hotel Trans Asia ahead of the 15th SAARCSummit.

The 15th SAARC Summit, beginning on August 2, is poised to take a new leap towards extending the theme of "Connectivity" to promoting "Partnership for people of SAARC" and addressing thethreats to food and energy security.

Noted journalists and civil society members from SAARC countries took part in the discussion. SAARC groups Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and SriLanka.

The participants said people's partnership in SAARC processes of cooperation can only be possible if they are allowed to move across the region without restrictions of visa regime and are facilitated by greater connectivity through road, rail, airand sea.

They urged the governments of SAARC member states to protectand respect press freedom and ensure safety of journalists.

The fourth SAARC Journalists Summit along with the second conference of South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) focused on the issues of media freedom and safety of journalists in the SouthAsian region.

The members of Bangladesh delegation include President of SAMC Bangladesh chapter Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelley and General Secretary Shaukat Mahmud, Editor of The Independent Mahbubul Alam, Editor of Bangladesh Observer Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, SAFMA General Secretary Zahiduzzaman Faruque, BFUJ President M Mozammel Huq and Secretary General Ruhul Amin Gazi, BFUJ President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, General Secretary of Jatiya Press Club Kamaluddin Shabuj, former ambassador Mohammad Zamirand Chief News Editor of ntv Khairul Anwar.
