Bangladesh and Sri Lanka vow to strengthen trade ties

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 31 (BSS)-Adviser for foreign affairs of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury held a meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart Rohitha Bogollagama at the Sri Lankan foreign ministry this afternoon.

Dr Chowdhury reached the Sri Lankan capital this morning to lead the Bangladesh delegation at the SAARC ministerial meeting that begins in Colombo tomorrow just ahead of the 15th SAARCSummit, according to a message received here.

The two foreign ministers expressed their satisfactions at the excellent bilateral relations between the two friendlycountries.

They, however, hoped that there was scope for greatercooperation particularly in the economic field.

"We must definitely do more to boost mutual trade andinvestments. The beginning of direct air link is most welcome.

But there should be more connectivity.

There are also possibilities for collaboration in food technology, tourism, ship building and information communicationtechnology sectors," the adviser told newsmen after the meeting.

He said that they also discussed ways and means of further strengthening and consolidating SAARC activities so that theorganisation becomes more of a people's SAARC.

Earlier the foreign adviser had a lunch meeting with a member of the European Parliament, Nirj Deva in Colombo. Deva isexpected to visit Bangladesh in August, the message said.
