Hyundai Motor Group becomes top SUV seller in China

SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's largest automaker Hyundai Motor Group
has become the No. 1 seller of sport utility vehicles in China for the first
time, outselling its Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp., the company said Monday.
Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. sold 148,367 SUVs in
the Chinese market in the January-September period, according to company
officials. Their combined market share came to 15.6 percent, beating Toyota's
15.3 percent.
The group's record sales were led by Kia's Sportage. A total of 53,729 units were
sold in the January-September period, making the Sportage the sixth most popular
SUV in China.
Hyundai's Tucson and its later version Tucson ix also made the list of 10 most
popular SUVs in China with 41,548 units and 39,053 units sold, respectively.
"The reason Hyundai-Kia was able to become No. 1 in terms of accumulated SUV
sales in China this year was because all of its models, including the Tucson ix,
marked steady sales," a company official said.
The official said the company's sales momentum in China will continue to gather
ground in the future with its latest Sportage R model launched in the Chinese
market last week.
China's SUV market remained rather small with some 700,000 units sold last year,
though China became the world's largest single market for vehicles with over 13
million cars sold there in 2009.
The market for sport utility vehicles, however, is quickly expanding with nearly 1 million units already sold this year, as increasing average income of Chinese households is also pushing up demand for leisure activities.
